Outdoor lanterns can hang on a chain inside or outside a structure - they can be hung on a post, sat on a table or alternatively there are many garden wall lanterns to choose from. Outdoors and in, designs include wall grazing, spotlighting, floodlighting, creating pathways and layering light with exciting varieties of bright and mood-setting light for the best garden lighting. Garden lanterns come in many shapes and sizes - they can be black wrought iron, painted, steel, tin or the more unusual chinese lanterns and moroccan lanterns. When buying garden lanterns be sure to use lighting components such as wiring bulbs, and fixtures designed for outdoor lantern use where weather and temperature extremes are more rigorous than indoors.  Note that some bulbs are not designed for use with the base up.  Do not use them in fixtures with the sockets at the top. A major difference in planning an outdoor lighting scheme is that it often  means pointing at a moving target.  While entrances, walkways and the house don't move, the trees shrubs, flowers and even grass sway and change during the seasons.  One section blooms and another goes to seed.  A key wall ornamental is trained or pruned into an attractive shape.  And most important of all, major elements in the outside lighting scheme grow.  Within a few years a spotlight placed too close to a shrub can be enveloped by it.  You need to keep up with the landscape changes through shifts in lighting emphasis.
